The Best Grocery Credit Card Depends on One Number: Your Monthly Spend
6% with a fee, 5% with a cap, 3% flat, or plain 2%? We run the actual dollar math at $300, $500, and $800 a month — including the caps most reviews skip.
Every "best grocery card" list gives you the same three cards and a star rating. What almost none of them do is run the arithmetic that actually decides the question: your monthly grocery number versus each card's rate, cap, and fee. That math flips the winner as your spending changes — so instead of a ranking, here is the actual calculation at three spending levels.
The four contenders (verified against current issuer terms)
- Blue Cash Preferred® (American Express) — 6% at U.S. supermarkets on up to $6,000 per year (then 1%), $95 annual fee. Also 6% on select streaming and 3% on gas and transit.
- Citi Custom Cash® — 5% on your top eligible spend category each billing cycle, capped at $500 per month (then 1%), no annual fee.
- Capital One Savor — 3% on groceries, dining, entertainment, and streaming, no cap, no annual fee.
- Any flat 2% card (Citi Double Cash®, Wells Fargo Active Cash®) — the baseline every category card has to beat.
The math at three spending levels
Annual grocery rewards, after subtracting any annual fee. Caps are applied exactly as the issuers state them.
| Card | $300/mo | $500/mo | $800/mo |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue Cash Preferred (6% to $6k/yr, −$95 fee) | $121 | $265 | $301 |
| Citi Custom Cash (5% to $500/mo) | $180 | $300 | $336 |
| Capital One Savor (3%, no cap) | $108 | $180 | $288 |
| Flat 2% card | $72 | $120 | $192 |
Two things most reviews miss are doing the work here:
- The Custom Cash quietly wins at moderate spending. At $500/month it earns $300 with no fee — beating the famous 6% card, because the 6% card gives $95 back to Amex every year. The Custom Cash only loses ground once you spend well past its $500 monthly cap, and only if groceries are its top category each cycle.
- Blue Cash Preferred's 6% stops at exactly $500/month. The $6,000 annual cap is the same number as the Custom Cash cap — spend above it earns 1%. At $800/month, $300 of every month earns just 1%.
Break-even points, so you can plug in your own number
- Blue Cash Preferred vs. a flat 2% card: the 4-point spread on capped spend must out-earn the $95 fee. Break-even is about $198/month of supermarket spending. Below that, the fee card loses to a free 2% card.
- Blue Cash Preferred vs. Savor's free 3%: the spread is 3 points on capped spend. Break-even is about $264/month.
- Blue Cash Preferred vs. Custom Cash: because both caps bind at $500/month, BCP only pulls ahead on the strength of its other categories (streaming, gas) — on groceries alone the free card wins until roughly $1,300/month.
The fine print that changes the answer
Superstores are not supermarkets. Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs like Costco generally do not code as "U.S. supermarkets," so grocery bonuses don't apply there. If most of your food budget goes through a superstore, a flat 2% card (or the store's own card) usually beats every grocery card in this article. Our methodology page covers how category coding works.
Welcome bonuses are one-time; earn rates are forever. A $250 signup offer can outweigh a year of rate differences, but the card you keep for years should win on ongoing value. That's why our calculator ranks by ongoing annual value and shows the bonus separately as first-year value.
Run your own number
The table above uses three example spending levels. Your real answer depends on your exact grocery number plus everything else you spend — a card that loses on groceries alone can still win your wallet on combined categories. Enter your actual monthly spending in the free optimizer and it computes the net annual value of every card in our database, fees and caps included. No account required.
Rates and caps verified against issuer-published terms in our card database at publication. Terms change — always confirm current details on the issuer's site before applying.
